The Security Product Infrastructure Gap

Security products are becoming data products. The hard part is no longer just building the UI or detection logic - it is operating the search, analytics, streaming, and derived-data infrastructure underneath.

Security products now need a full data infrastructure layer

Customers expect fast search, fresh detections, timelines, tenant-aware analytics, enrichment, dashboards, investigation views, and long-retention queries. Underneath that experience, product teams are forced to run search clusters, Kafka consumers, transformations, materialized views, backfills, deduplication, and query serving infrastructure.

That is not the differentiated product. That is the plumbing the product is stuck carrying.

The hidden cost is roadmap drag

Every sprint spent tuning Elasticsearch, operating ClickHouse sidecars, debugging Kafka consumers, or rewriting ingestion jobs is a sprint not spent on threat intelligence, detection quality, product UX, enrichment, automation, or customer value.

The cost shows up as delayed launches, senior engineering distraction, gross margin pressure, freshness failures, slow queries, and fragile custom glue that becomes harder to replace over time.

Generic infrastructure solves pieces

Elasticsearch and OpenSearch are useful starting points for search, but become painful as cost, scale, retention, and multi-tenancy grow. ClickHouse is a powerful analytics engine, but teams still assemble ingestion, serving, search behavior, freshness, tenant isolation, streaming, and product APIs around it. Warehouses are excellent analytical systems, but security products often need margin-efficient, low-latency, customer-facing infrastructure.

The better question

The question is not whether a strong engineering team can build this infrastructure. Of course it can. The better question is whether that team should spend the next 12–24 months building undifferentiated search, streaming, freshness, and analytics infrastructure.

For most cybersecurity companies, the advantage is detection logic, threat intelligence, workflow, product experience, and customer understanding - not the plumbing layer.

Bring Mach5 one painful workload

Start with slow customer-facing search, an expensive Elasticsearch cluster, brittle Kafka pipelines, difficult backfills, or derived data your team wishes it did not own.
